Here is my first round mock draft for the 2020 WNBA Mock Draft, which will be held tonight in a virtual style.
1. New York Liberty- Sabrina Ionescu, Point Guard, Oregon: This should be an easy choice for the Liberty here as they select their new face of the franchise after the trading of Tina Charles. Ionescu was all world in college as she was the only player in Division-1 history to have 1,000 points, rebounds, and assists each.
2. Dallas Wings- Satou Sabally, Power Forward, Oregon: Ionescu's teammate goes next to a Wings team that has some young talent there already. Sabally is someone that is versatile and that could space the floor very well. She would be the ideal front court mate for Arike Ogunbowale.
3. Indiana Fever- Lauren Cox, Power Forward/Center, Baylor: The Fever have options here as they have a lot of needs and they snag the big here in Cox. Cox is versatile, she's excels in the paint, has a consistent jump shot, and great footwork. Despite injury issues, she excels on both sides of the ball and would be good front court mate with Teaira McCowan.
4. Atlanta Dream- Chennedy Carter, Point Guard, Texas A&M: Carter is someone that is a high volume scorer and would have an immediate impact in the league. This would be the ideal pick for the Dream, despite some new additions including Courtney Williams, they still have a need for a consistent scorer.
5. Dallas Wings (from Phoenix Mercury)- Ty Harris, Point Guard, South Carolina: With their second first rounder (courtesy of the Skylar Diggins-Smith trade), they take the solid guard with Harris. Harris is a very good facilitator and takes care of the ball very well.
6. Minnesota Lynx- Megan Walker, Shooting Guard/Small Forward, Connecticut: The Lynx snag the talented wing in Walker. Many people think she should have went back to school, but her shooting ability is what makes her an intriguing prospect. Walker in this scenario would be reunited with former college teammate Napheesa Collier.
7. Dallas Wings (from Seattle Storm via Connecticut Sun, Phoenix Mercury)- Bella Alarie, Power Forward, Princeton: This pick has bounced around the league a lot. The Wings land it in result of the Skylar Diggins-Smith trade and help replace her by snagging a solid big in Alarie. People are down on her due to the fact she went to an Ivy League school, but she came into her own with a good skill set despite still having some flaws.
8. Chicago Sky- Crystal Dangerfield, Point Guard, Connecticut: The talented point guard drops to thr Sky, who would gladly take her in this spot. Dangerfield brings good court awareness and leadership and it helps her that she's surrounded by a lot of talented players led by Allie Quigley.
9. New York Liberty (from Las Vegas Aces via Dallas Wings)- Ruthy Hebard, Power Forward, Oregon: It would only be fitting if the Liberty replace Tina Charles with one of the two first round picks they received in the deal with Ionescu's former teammate in Hebard, who she had excellent chemistry with. Hebard is a rebounding machine and excels with scoring in the interior.
10. Phoenix Mercury (from Los Angeles Sparks via Connecticut Sun)- Te'a Cooper, Point Guard, Baylor: The Mercury have options with this pick, which they got in the deal that sent DeWonna Bonner to the Sun. Here I have snagging the point guard in Cooper, who can flat out shoot and gives the Mercury much needed depth and youth at the position.
11. Seattle Storm (from Connecticut Sun)- Beatrice Mompremier, Power Forward/Center, Miami: The Storm are excited as the talented big falls to them at the end of the first round. Mompremier is someone that was held back by a foot injury in college which halted her development. Her strength is her defensive game and her rebounding skills and she could help the Storms second unit.
12. New York Liberty (from Washington Mystics)- Mikiah Herbert-Harrigan, Small Forward, South Carolina: With their final first round pick, the Liberty roll with one of the more underrated players in the draft in Herbert-Harrigan. Herbert-Harrigan is someone that was on a great team in the Gamecocks in college and is a great scorer and would fit nicely with Ionescu.
