2016-17 NBA First Half Awards

Here are my award picks for the first half of the 2016-17 NBA season.

MVP: Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder: I could have gone with a couple of different players for this, but Westbrook is my pick. He is averaging a triple-double this season and is single-handily carrying the Thunder into the playoffs. Some folks thought the Thunder weren't going to be a playoff team, but they will almost certainly make the playoffs barring a collapse.
Runner up: James Harden, Houston Rockets

Defensive Player of the Year: Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors: Green was a finalist for this award the last two seasons and right now, he would likely win this award had the season ended today. Green does a superb job defending opposing players and the Warriors are a better defensive team when he's on the floor.
Runner up: Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio Spurs

Rookie of the Year: Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers: Embiid would have been a third year player had not been for injuries. That said, Embiid has been outstanding this season and because of that, the 76ers aren't a pushover anymore. The 76ers have a nice foundation of him and Ben Simmons (once he comes back from injury) for years to come.
Runner up: Malcolm Brogdon, Milwaukee Bucks

Sixth Man of the Year: Eric Gordon, Houston Rockets: Gordon has had an incredible season. The Rockets took a chance on Gordon and he has been a fine addition off the bench that has been critical to their success. It also helps that he has been healthy this season.
Runner up: Lou Williams, Los Angeles Lakers

Most Improved Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks: Antetokounmpo is finally having the breakout season people were expecting last season. His perimeter shooting game has improved and he has had a couple triple-doubles as well.
Runner up: Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

Coach of the Year: Mike D'Antoni, Houston Rockets: D'Antoni has done an outstanding job this season. This Rockets team is perfect for him and for his offensive system. It also has helped that he and James Harden are able to co-exist.
Runner up: Scott Brooks, Washington Wizards

Executive of the Year: Bob Myers, Golden State Warriors: Myers deserves credit for putting together the best team in the league. Luring Kevin Durant in free agency obviously was huge for them.
Runner up: Daryl Morey, Houston Rockets

2016 NFL Season Awards

Here are my award picks for the 2016 NFL Season.

MVP: Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: Ryan had an incredible season this season leading his team to the Super Bowl. The Falcons had the best offense in the NFL season and Ryan desrves credit for that. It also helps that he has Julio Jones to throw passes to.
Runner up: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Offensive Player of the Year: Le'Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers: Bell was absolutely tremendous this season for the Steelers coming off his injury both running the ball and catching the ball out of the backfield. His injury in the AFC Championship game was brutal and the Steelers certainly missed his presence in that game.
Runner up: Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys

Defensive Player of the Year: Landon Collins, New York Giants: Collins was absolutely tremendous this season on one of the leagues most improved defenses. His improvement from his rookie season has been incredible and he's come a long way.
Runner up: Khalil Mack, Oakland Raiders

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys: Elliott was absolutely tremendous in his rookie season. The Cowboys certainly have a foundation for the years to come with him and Dak Prescott. It certainly helps that he has that terrific offensive line to run behind.
Runner up: Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Joey Bosa, San Diego Chargers: Bosa was outstanding in his rookie season, despite missing the first few games due to a contract holdout. The Chargers found themselves a cornerstone defensive player for years to come.
Runner up: Keanu Neal, Atlanta Falcons

Coach of the Year: Dan Quinn, Atlanta Falcons: Quinn has done an incredible job in his second season with the Falcons. He deserves credit for the teams improvement defensively. Who had this team making the Super Bowl let alone making the playoffs before the season? I didn't.
Runner up: Adam Gase, Miami Dolphins

Comeback Player of the Year: Bell. See: Offensive Player of the Year.
Runner up: Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers

Super Bowl LI Prediction

Here is my prediction for Super Bowl LI on Sunday, February 5th.

New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons- 6:30, FOX: This is a very enticing Super Bowl for many reasons. New England is coming off their AFC Championship game win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Atlanta is coming off their impressive NFC Championship game win against the Green Bay Packers. We have the Patriots here yet again as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick go for their fifth Super Bowl win and the Falcons are aiming for their first championship in franchise history. The Pats are playing very well on both sides of the ball and so are the Falcons. The great offensive teams typically don't do well in Super Bowls (2007 Patriots, 2013 Broncos), but the Falcons have a ton of great weapons in Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman, Mohamed Sanu among them and Matt Ryan will likely win the MVP. The Pats offense isn't as good as the Falcons, but they have some playmakers in Dion Lewis, LaGarrette Blount, Julian Edelman, and Chris Hogan among them. Defensively, Malcolm Butler will be covering Jones and he's done well against top receivers before. Vic Beasley is the Falcons defensive playmaker and he'll make some plays as all. The Patriots are just too good in these spots and the experience will be a big difference as the Patriots will win their fifth Super Bowl in franchise history and it will be impressive that they'll be doing this without Rob Gronkowski.

Prediction: New England 27, Atlanta 24.

Super Bowl MVP: Tom Brady
