2016 NFL Conference Championship Predictions

Here are my predictions for the NFL Conference Championship games.

Sunday, January 24th
(A2) New England Patriots (12-4) vs (A1) Denver Broncos (12-4)- 3:00, CBS: This is a fascinating AFC Championship game we have here featuring two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. This is the seventeenth and perhaps the final time we will see Brady versus Manning. New England is coming off an impressive win in the divisional round over the Kansas City Chiefs. Denver is coming off a come from behind win in the divisional round over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos do have home field advantage and Brady hasn't had good history in Denver, but I will take the Patriots here on the road and advance to their second straight Super Bowl in a close game.
Prediction: New England 23, Denver 20.

(N2) Arizona Cardinals (13-3) vs (N1) Carolina Panthers (15-1)- 6:40, FOX: This game has a ton of intrigue and these are clearly the best teams in the NFC for sure. Arizona is coming off a thrilling overtime win in the divisional round against the Green Bay Packers in which Aaron Rodgers single handily kept the Packers a chance in that game. Carolina is coming off an impressive win over the Seattle Seahawks in which they led 31-0 at the half and gave up 24 in the second half. Cam Newton is the MVP frontrunner and Carson Palmer looked awfully shaky against the Packers so give me the Panthers to advance to their first Super Bowl since 2004.
Prediction: Carolina 27, Arizona 23.

2016 NFL Divisional Round Predictions

Here are my predictions for the divisional round of the 2016 NFL Playoffs.

Saturday, January 16th
(A5) Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) vs (A2) New England Patriots - 4:30, CBS: This should be a very interesting game considering that the Chiefs destroyed the Patriots in week four of the 2014 season. Kansas City is coming off a very impressive shutout victory in Houston against the Texans in the Wild Card round. New England was 2-4 in their final six regular season games largely due to injury. Well, it does look like the Patriots are getting healthy at the right time and they are poised to go on another Super Bowl run so they are the pick here to go to the AFC Championship game for the fifth straight season.
Prediction: New England 27, Kansas City 20.

(N5) Green Bay Packers vs (N2) Arizona Cardinals- 8:15, NBC: Here we have a rematch of week sixteen, which was when the Cardinals destroyed the Packers by thirty points. Green Bay is coming off a nice win in Washington in the Wild Card round in which they played a terrific second half on both sides of the ball. Arizona has been playing terrific football down the stretch with the exception of week seventeen against the Seattle Seahawks. I do think this will be a closer game than it was a few weeks ago and arguably the leagues best team in the Cardinals will move on to the NFC  Championship game.
Prediction: Arizona 30, Green Bay 24.

Sunday, January 17th
(N6) Seattle Seahawks (10-6) vs (N1) Carolina Panthers (15-1)- 1:00, FOX: These two teams met earlier in the season and the Panthers came from behind and won a thriller in a Seattle. Now we have an intriguing rematch here. Seattle (lets face it) got lucky to win in Minneapolis against the Vikings since Blair Walsh missed a cheap shot field goal that would have likely won the game for the Vikings. Carolina only lost one game in the regular season and that's remarkable. This was a very tough call but something tells me that Russell Wilson and the Seahawks take advantage of a banged  up Panthers secondary and make their third straight NFC Championship game.
Prediction: Seattle 26, Carolina 24.

(A6) Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6) vs (A1) Denver Broncos (12-4)- 4:40, CBS: These two teams met up in week fifteen and the Steelers came from behind to beat the Broncos and Brock Osweiler. Pittsburgh was also fortunate since they won a nasty one in Cincinnati against the Bengals in the Wild Card round in which the Bengals were penalized down the stretch, Ben Rothlisberger hurt his shoulder and Antonio Brown had gotten concussed. Denver has home field throughout the playoffs and Peyton Manning came back and looked decent after replacing Brock Osweiler. Manning is the biggest Wild Card of the playoffs because he looked done before he missed time and than he came back and looked decent against the San Diego Chargers. My pick for this game is solely on whether both Ben Rothlisberger and/or Antonio Brown will play or not. My guess is that Rothlisberger and Brown both play and they'll lead the Steelers to the AFC Championship game for the first time in five seasons. This pick will change if Rothlisberger doesn't play.
Prediction: Pittsburgh 27, Denver 23.

2016 College Football National Title Game Prediction

The second College Football National Title game in the College Football Playoff system is right around the corner! It will be an fun game between Clemson and Alabama and here's what I think will happen.

(1) Clemson Tigers (14-0; 8-0) vs (2) Alabama Crimson Tide (13-1; 7-1)- 8:30, ESPN: I believe this is going to be one hell of a game. The Tigers are a team that can flat out score and that's led by quarterback DeShaun Watson. The Tiger's defense was solid in the Orange Bowl against an Oklahoma team who had a pretty good offense going into that game. The Crimson Tide are a team that is outstanding on defense and has many projected first round picks for the upcoming NFL draft on their pass rush. The Tide's offense was pretty good in the Cotton Bowl against Michigan State, who had a pretty good defense going into that game. To me, this game comes down to whether the Clemson run defense can stop Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry or not. Henry will be the difference here as the Alabama Crimson Tide will win their fourth National Championship under Nick Saban in a close game.

Prediction: Alabama 27, Clemson 21.

Candidates to replace Lovie Smith as Buccaneers head coach

A few nights ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that head coach Lovie Smith had been fired. Here are some candidates to replace Smith as Buccaneers head coach.

1. Teryl Austin, Defensive Coordinator, Detroit Lions
2. Doug Marrone, Former Buffalo Bills Head Coach
3. Mike Shanahan, Former Denver Broncos/Washington Redskins Head Coach
4. Josh McDaniels, Offensive Coordinator, New England Patriots
5. Adam Gase, Offensive Coordinator, Chicago Bears
6. Sean McDermott, Defensive Coordinator, Carolina Panthers
7. Hue Jackson, Offensive Coordinator, Cincinnati Bengals
8. Dirk Koetter, Offensive Coordinator, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
9. Jon Gruden, Analyst, ESPN
10. Chip Kelly, Former Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach

2016 NFL Wild Card Predictions

Here are my picks for Wild Card weekend of the 2016 NFL Playoffs.

Saturday, January 9th
(A5) Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) vs (A4) Houston Texans (9-7)- 4:35, ESPN/ABC: It's amazing that these two teams made the playoffs after Kansas City started 1-5 only to win ten straight to earn a Wild Card berth and Houston started 2-5 only to win seven of their final nine games to win the AFC South. This should be a low scoring, defensive type of game, but give me Alex Smith and the Chiefs to win their eleventh straight game to advance to the division round.
Prediction: Kansas City 21, Houston 17.

(A6) Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6) vs (A3) Cincinnati Bengals (12-4)- 8:15, CBS: Two division rivals facing off in a playoff game is always fun. Pittsburgh needed help to make the playoffs with winning last week in Cleveland and the Jets losing in Buffalo (as I predicted). Andy Dalton likely won't be starting this weekend do to his broken thumb, so AJ McCarron will probably get the nod. Whether Dalton plays or not, it doesn't change my pick for this contest. The Steelers and Ben Rothlisberger love to thrive in these types of games and something tells me that they'll get the win on the road and if especially Dalton plays, questions will arise about Marvin Lewis's job and the teams reputation will head in the wrong direction.
Prediction: Pittsburgh 27, Cincinnati 20.

Sunday January 10th
(N6) Seattle Seahawks (10-6) vs (N3) Minnesota Vikings (11-5)- 1:05, NBC: It's awfully rare to see NBC get a 1:00 Sunday afternoon game, let alone an afternoon playoff game since CBS usually gets this slot, but here we are. Seattle has been inconsistent for most of the season, but has won six of their final seven games to clinch a Wild Card berth. Minnesota made a statement in Lambeau last week by clinching the NFC North, but they did come close to blowing the game. This was a tough one to pick, but something tells me Russell Wilson outplays Teddy Bridgewater and the Seahawks are the team that ends up in the divisional round for the fourth season in a row.
Prediction: Seattle 27, Minnesota 23.

(N5) Green Bay Packers (10-6) vs (N4) Washington Redskins (9-7)- 4:40, FOX: This is perhaps the most fascinating game of the first round. Green Bay started 6-0, but ended up going 4-6 in their final ten games and stumbled into a Wild Card spot. Washington was perhaps the biggest surprise in the league this season and wound up winning a wide open NFC East by winning six of their final nine games. Aaron Rodgers is the better quarterback and the Redskins are the hotter and arguably the better team here. Give me Kirk Cousins and the Skins to win this one.
Prediction: Washington 30, Green Bay 24.

2016 NFL Mock Draft: 1st Edition

Here is my first NFL Mock draft of the year.

1. Tennessee Titans- Laremy Tunsil, Offensive Tackle, Ole Miss: Priority No. 1 for the Titans should be to protect Marcus Mariota, something they have struggled to do consistently in 2015. Tunsil is arguably the most talented player in this year's draft class and able to contribute from Day 1, pushing Taylor Lewan over to right tackle.

2. Cleveland Browns- Jared Goff, Quarterback, California: Johnny Manziel's time in Cleveland is basically done, and he never really gave good enough reason to keep him around. Once again the Browns are starting anew. What better way to do it than with a quarterback? Of the many glaring needs on the Browns, quarterback is the most obvious and important. Goff is ready for the NFL from a mental standpoint and has solid athleticism.

3. San Diego Chargers- Joey Bosa, Defensive End, Ohio State: San Diego ranked near the bottom of the league in pass rush production in 2015 and needs to address the position in the draft. Although some will say he belongs in a four-man front, Bosa is scheme versatile with the skill-set and instincts to be a disruptive force from different spots on the defensive line.

4. Dallas Cowboys- Jalen Ramsey, Cornerback/Safety, Florida State: Dallas has a ton of needs in this upcoming draft after a dismal 4-12 season in which Tony Romo was out for most of it. Their offense should be fine with Romo back and they can draft a running back and a potential Romo replacement in one of the later rounds. I do feel that they need to straighten their secondary and Ramsey would be a nice get here since he can play both safety and cornerback.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars- Vernon Hargreaves III, Cornerback, Florida: The Jaguars have some solid talent at cornerback, but no true No. 1 cover man. That's what Florida's Vernon Hargreaves can be. Some may overthink Hargreaves' height—he's roughly 5'10"—but you can't overlook his play. He's erased almost every wide receiver he's faced in college and has the instincts, ball skills, leaping ability and toughness to be a starter in man or zone coverage from Day 1.

6. Baltimore Ravens- Ronnie Stanley, Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame: Baltimore inked Eugene Monroe to a lucrative extension, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy, making it tough for the Ravens to rely on him to start 16 games in 2016. Stanley not only adds instant depth, but gives Baltimore a long-term plan at a position of need.

7. San Francisco 49ers- Paxton Lynch, Quarterback, Memphis: The 49ers are in full rebuilding mode with needs all over the roster, including quarterback. With Blaine Gabbert under contract through the 2016 season, Lynch won't be asked to start right away, but can sit and develop at his own pace, giving San Francisco a long-term option at the position.

8. Miami Dolphins- DeForest Buckner, Defensive End, Oregon: The Dolphins need to continue and invest in the defensive line and Buckner gives Miami another option on the edges.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Mackensie Alexander, Cornerback, Clemson: It's worth monitoring Alexander's draft decision. He's only a redshirt sophomore but could make a name for himself on a national stage in next week's College Football Playoff Championship. Alexander's instincts are impressive, and only overtaken by his athleticism.

10. New York Giants- Shaq Lawson, Defensive End, Clemson: The Giants have an obvious hole at defensive end, which showed in the stat sheet, ranking 30th in the NFL in sacks this season. Lawson is an efficient pass rusher with the power, quickness and ball awareness that allows him to be successful.

11. Chicago Bears- Myles Jack, Linebacker, UCLA: The Bears are far removed from the days of Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs dominating the NFC and are missing impact defensive players on the current roster. Jack is an impressive athlete with outstanding instincts, showing the cover skills that will make him an instant contributor.

12. New Orleans Saints- Robert Nkemdiche, Defensive Tackle, Ole Miss: There's going to be some questions Nkemdiche will have to answer about his off-field actions, but at 12 he's too talented to pass up. Nkemdiche has the size and athleticism to play inside or out and that versatility is what the Saints need.

13. Philadelphia Eagles- Jonathan Allen, Defensive End, Alabama: Whoever is hired as head coach in Philadelphia, the pass rush on defense will need to be addressed. Allen developed into a terror for opposing offenses this season and has the scheme versatility to play in even and odd fronts.

14. Oakland Raiders- Jaylon Smith, Linebacker, Notre Dame: Smith would be an excellent addition to a promising Oakland defense, and given his ability to play weak-side, strong-side or middle linebacker, he's a fit no matter which personnel grouping the Raiders roll out.

15. St. Louis Rams- Laquon Treadwell, Wide Receiver, Ole Miss: The Rams got good production from Tavon Austin in 2015, but the need for a true No. 1 wide receiver still exists. And Treadwell is like a leaner Alshon Jeffery with his physical style of play and ability to outmuscle defensive backs for contested passes.

16. Detroit Lions- Jack Conklin, Offensive Tackle, Michigan State: Protecting Matthew Stafford was a problem for the Detroit Lions all season, and some of that is due to left tackle Riley Reiff continuing to play out of position. Drafting a left tackle in Round 1 allows the team to move Reiff to his more natural right tackle position, fixing two holes with one draft pick.

17. Atlanta Falcons- Darron Lee, Linebacker, Ohio State: Lee's best fit is likely as a sub-package linebacker who can rush the quarterback, cover tight ends and attack in space. He's fast, energetic and a playmaker on defense. In Atlanta, he could fill that K.J. Wright-type role that Quinn used in Seattle. And given the lack of speed in the back seven on defense in Atlanta, Lee could see a very active role early on.

18. Indianapolis Colts- Ezequiel Elliott, Running Back, Ohio State: Indianapolis needs to improve the offensive and defensive lines, but the Colts have surprised in the first round the last few years and could again this year. Elliott isn't quite on the Todd Gurley level, but he's a complete back and will greatly help Andrew Luck and the passing game.

19. Buffalo Bills- A'Shawn Robinson, Defensive Tackle, Alabama: The vaunted Buffalo defense looked mediocre at times this season with many claiming that Rex Ryan's “scheme” was the issue. Robinson is a player who transcends scheme and would give Ryan a player who can play anywhere on the defensive line.

20. New York Jets- Leonard Floyd, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Georgia: The Jets have plenty of beef up front on defense, but need to add some sizzle on the edges to better put pressure on the pocket. Floyd is a lanky bender with pass rush upside.

21. Houston Texans- Carson Wentz, Quarterback, North Dakota State: The Texans haven't selected a passer in the first round since their inaugural draft in 2002, but that should change this year. Bill O'Brien has been searching for the right guy to groom at quarterback and whether or not Wentz is that player, Houston needs to take a chance on a young signal-caller.

22. Washington Redskins- Kenny Clark, Defensive Tackle, UCLA: Washington's run to the playoffs has been done with a defense that ranks near the bottom of the league against the run. Clark, who can play over the nose, is a powerhouse against the run.

23. Seattle Seahawks- Jason Spriggs, Offensive Tackle, Indiana: Russell Okung is a free agent after the season, and if he happens to leave Spriggs would be a solid replacement. He's an athletic left tackle who will undoubtedly rise during the offseason process.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers- Tre'Davious White, Cornerback, LSU: Pittsburgh still needs to find talent in the secondary, and White is easily the best cornerback available. He offers good length and playmaking at the position.

25. Green Bay Packers- Jarran Reed, Defensive Tackle, Alabama: Even with Mike Daniels locked up long-term, Reed is worthy of this pick with his versatility that fits Green Bay's odd front.

26. Minnesota Vikings- Corey Coleman, Wide Receiver, Baylor: A lot of fingers can be pointed as to why the Vikings rank near the bottom of the league in passing yards, but the lack of perimeter weapons is a substantial reason. Coleman would add an explosive element to the offense and add one more playmaker for the defense to account for.

27. Kansas City Chiefs- Sheldon Rankins, Defensive Tackle, Louisville: The Chiefs are clicking on defense, especially up front, but like every team, Kansas City could use more depth. Rankins is a stout run defender with better than expected pass rush traits for a 300-pounder.

28. Cincinnati Bengals- Su'a Cravens, Outside Linebacker/Safety, USC: The Cincinnati Bengals defense was one of their greatest strengths in the 2015 regular season and one of the primary reasons why they won the AFC North. However, even with their strengths there is still room for improvement, particularly in the back of the secondary at the safety position. Cravens has the tools to change positions from linebacker to safety and he could very well do that.

29. Arizona Cardinals- Emmanuel Ogbah, Defensive End, Oklahoma State: The Cardinals will need help along the defensive line sooner than later, and a talent like Ogbah is too good to pass up with this choice. He's a high-effort lineman whose attitude will fit perfectly in Arizona.

30. Denver Broncos- Jerald Hawkins, Offensive Tackle, LSU: It's clear the Broncos need offensive tackle help, and it'll be tricky finding one this late in the first round. Hawkins gets the nod over players like teammate Vadal Alexander or Le'Raven Clark of Texas Tech because of his athleticism and potential.

31. Carolina Panthers- Shon Coleman, Offensive Tackle, Auburn: Michael Oher has done far better than anyone expected at left tackle for the Carolina Panthers, but realistically, he's not the long-term answer. General manager Dave Gettleman has to know this, and while he deserves credit for believing in Oher when few did, he also can't hold on to him longer than needed.

2015-16 NFL Black Monday Preview

This years edition of NFL's Black Monday shall be very interesting. Coaches and GM's will be fired, like every year. Who will get the axe this year? We shall see to find out. Here are my thoughts.

Atlanta Falcons- The team went 8-8 in Dan Quinn's first season as head coach. He is staying although the team did lose three of their final eleven games. GM Thomas Dmitroff is likely safe as well.

Arizona Cardinals- No chance head coach Bruce Arians and GM Steve Keim get let go after going 13-3 and earning a first round bye in the NFC playoffs. This team has been amazing over these last couple seasons.

Baltimore Ravens-  Despite a dismal 5-11 season in which Joe Flacco got injured, head coach John Harbaugh and GM Ozzie Newsome should be retained.

Buffalo Bills- Team ownership already came out and said that head coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley will return, despite a disappointing 8-8 record.

Carolina Panthers- Ron Rivera and GM Dave Gettleman no doubt will be back after going 15-1 and earning home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs.

Chicago Bears- The Bears were a much better team this season than last season and head coach John Fox and GM Ryan Pace will still be around despite finishing 6-10.

Cincinnati Bengals- This is a tricky one. Head coach Marvin Lewis's fate could very well be determined whether Andy Dalton is back for this weekends game against the Pittsburgh Steelers or not. If Dalton returns next weekend and the team loses, Lewis could get axed.

Cleveland Browns- Ownership a few hours ago already came out and said that head coach Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer have been fired.

Dallas Cowboys- Despite a dismal 4-12 season in which Tony Romo missed most of the season, Jerry Jones came out and said head coach Jason Garrett's job is safe.

Denver Broncos- John Elway will not make a coaching change for a second straight season after his team earned home field advantage in the AFC playoffs despite the quarterback controversy. Elway loves head coach Gary Kubiak so I believe he sticks around for a while.

Detroit Lions- Despite winning seven of their final eleven games, I believe ownership will clean house by firing head coach Jim Caldwell and find a new GM to replace Martin Mayhew.

Green Bay Packers- Mike McCarthy's job should be safe, although who knows what could happen if they don't advance far in the postseason. GM Ted Thompson isn't going anywhere for sure.

Houston Texans- Head coach Bill O'Brien deserves credit for turning his teams season around winning the AFC South so he'll return for a third season. GM Rick Smith should still be around as well.

Indianapolis Colts- It is inevitable that head coach Chuck Pagano and the Colts will part ways. GM Ryan Grigson's future with the team is uncertain at best at the moment.

Jacksonville Jaguars- Ownership came out and said that head coach Gus Bradley will return. GM David Caldwell is probably back for another season as well.

Kansas City Chiefs- Head coach Andy Reid deserves a ton of credit for turning a 1-5 dismal start into an 11-5 season and a Wild Card berth in the AFC. Reid and GM John Dorsey aren't going anywhere.

Miami Dolphins- There will no doubt be a new head coach in town after interim head coach Dan Campbell did horribly. There will also be a new GM as Dennis Hickey and the team parted ways.

Minnesota Vikings- Head coach Mike Zimmer has done a terrific job in his second season as head coach. He and GM Rick Spielman aren't going anywhere.

New England Patriots- Bill Belichick's not going anywhere.

New Orleans Saints- There is a lot of speculation that the Saints and head coach Sean Payton will part ways. GM Mickey Loomis should still be around, though.

New York Giants- All signs point to head coach Tom Coughlin resigning. I do think that's the case, but GM Jerry Reese being let go isn't out of the question, either.

New York Jets- Despite missing the postseason with ten wins, year one under new GM Mike Maccagnon and head coach Todd Bowles should be considered a success. They should be around for awhile.

Oakland Raiders- GM Reggie McKenzie has quietly done a nice job drafting the last few seasons so he should stick around. Head coach Jack Del Rio should be back after the team improved this season in his first season with the team.

Pittsburgh Steelers- Since the team is back in the postseason, head coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert will be back although it wouldn't have been guaranteed whether Tomlin would have been back or not if they had missed the postseason entirely.

Philadelphia Eagles- The team fired head coach Chip Kelly last Tuesday. The team is currently searching for two Kelly replacements since he was the GM of the team as well.

Saint Louis Rams- Most reports indicate that head coach Jeff Fisher will return despite a 7-9 season. GM Les Snead should be back as well.

San Diego Chargers- Some reports say that head coach Mike McCoy will be retained and there are other reports saying he'll be fired. Keep an eye on this one. GM Tom Telesco should be back.

San Francisco 49ers- There are many reports suggesting that head coach Jim Tomasula will be one and done in the Bay Area. GM Trent Baalke should be back, though.

Seattle Seahawks- Head coach Pete Carroll should be back after making the postseason for the fourth straight season. GM John Schnieder isn't going anywhere, either.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Despite a 6-10 record, head coach Lovie Smith should be back as well as GM Jason Licht after the team improved from last season.

Tennessee Titans- There will be a new coach in town after the team fired Ken Whisenhunt midseason. I do think GM Ruston Webster will be back, though.

Washington Redskins- Head coach Jay Gruden was a popular first coach fired pick back in August. Not so fast, after the team won the NFC East this season, he should definitely return. GM Scot McCloughan will be around for awhile as well as he did a nice job putting the team together.
